Did anyone's
weiner dog
get that
canine flu
after the
horse race?
It mimics
kennel cough
and is passed
on from horses to
dogs.
email me at

if you have heard anything
about it.
Thanks!

Weiner Dog Races

The Happy Couple.

Yesterday was spent at the Los Alamitos racetrack, watching the weiner dogs race.

The location was an honest to goodness racetrack, which was actually functioning that day, so there was a wonderful combination of grizzled veteran of playing the ponies and families with ballons and screamin children. Even better, they would run a horce race, and these magnificent monsters would pound past. Then, they'd bring out a tiny little start gate and a bunch of weiner dogs would run the same track that the horses would just on.

Well, "run" was a stretch, because a lot of them would sniff at the ground, or each other, or wander toards the fans. Only a few would actually run towards the finish line, little lithe weiners bounding over the dirt and towards glory.

Even better than that were the spectators, who were the dog-obsessed sort that you normally only see in Christopher Guest movies. One woman told me her daughter-in-law found out about the race the internet, but "We don't have one of those machines yet. If I did I'd spend all day on it staring at weenie dogs!"

Costumes abounded, as did weiner-dog themed t-shirts on human and dog alike. The winners of each heat were photographed with a man in a hot-dog suit. Although enthusiastic, the crowd did not join me in chanting "Wei - Ner Dogs! Wei - Ner Dogs!" Nonetheless, it was a day to remember.

In summary: If you must go to only one weiner-dog themed sporting event, I would reccomend the Weiner Dog Races.
